MHADA assigned to be the nodal agency for re-development of 207 BDD chawls

An empowered committee comprising secretaries of Public Works Department, Housing, Revenue, Urban Development, Law and Judiciary, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner and MHADA officials will supervise the implementation of the redevelopment project
It was announced on Tuesday that the Mumbai board of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) will act as the nodal agency for redevelopment of 207 Bombay Development Directorate (BDD) chawls that were built around 1920s.
Minister of State for Housing Ravindra Waikar made this announcement in both the Houses of the State Legislature.
An empowered committee comprising secretaries of Public Works Department, Housing, Revenue, Urban Development, Law and Judiciary, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner and MHADA officials will supervise the implementation of the redevelopment project, he said.
“The state cabinet at its meeting yesterday approved the proposal for creation of separate Development Control Rule (DCR) for the redevelopment project. It will initially cover BDD chawls at Worli and Naigaon,” Waikar said.
“In respect of the BDD chawls on central government land at Sewri, those buildings will be included once the central government agency approves their redevelopment,” he added.
The minister said that the approved proposal includes redevelopment of shops, stalls and places of worship.
The profit sharing ratio in the redevelopment of the BDD chawls between government and MHADA will be 70 and 30 respectively, he said.
However, the All BDD Chawl Tenants Association, led by Dr Raju Waghmare that met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, informed him of opposition to the proposed redevelopment, arguing that MHADA’s “legacy” has been one of corruption and poor quality of construction.
Speaking to reporters at Vidhan Bhavan later, Waghmare said MHADA could not redevelop its own 56 societies in the past and wondered as to how they could manage to redevelop 207 BDD chawls.
“The association demanded creation of a separate board headed by Chief Minister comprising experts from the construction industry and representatives of the tenants associations,” he said.
He said the agencies selected by the association could provide the same and better benefits to the government than what the MHADA can give to the tenants. MM NP PVI92.  source   accommodationtimes

Malia Obama helps translate for her father during first family's trip to Cuba

Her father may be president, but Malia Obama just proved he doesn't always know best — or in this case, more.
The president's 17-year-old daughter served as her dad's personal interpreter during a visit with locals on their historic trip to Cuba, according to White House photographer Pete Souza.
"The President and Malia share a laugh as Malia translates Spanish to English for her dad at a restaurant in Old Havana," Souza wrote in the caption of the photo, which he posted on Instagram.
The first family arrived in Cuba on Sunday evening. The three-day trip marks the first time a U.S. president has visited the island nation in 88 years.

World Twenty20, Match 24: England vs Afghanistan- Players to watch out for

New Delhi: England will look to gain more solidity as they take on a spirited Afghanistan in a crucial Super 10 Group 1 encounter of the ICC World Twenty20 at the Feroz Shah Kotla here.
England made a sensational comeback after suffering a big defeat against West Indies. Joe Root led England to a record chase of 229 runs against South Africa and that has brought in a buzz and wave of positivity in the English camp.
England know they need to win this tie as it will put them in a position from which they can get closer to qualification for the semi-finals. The inexperienced bowling has let them down and the side would depend on its batters again to see them through.
For Afghanistan, despite losing both games so far, they have shown flashes of highly entertained and well fought cricket. Their inexperience against top sides shows the inability to finish lines, but given more opportunities, Afghanistan looks to have a bright future.
The war-torn nation will look to cause an upset and send England packing out of the tournament.
Here are the players to watch out for in this intense tie.
Joe Root (England): The English batsman proved against South Africa why he is one of the top rated batsmen in world cricket across all formats and that he shoulders the responsibility of the side to will. Root was a class act against the Proteas and had also contributed against West Indies earlier to highlight his form. Root is a fantastic player of spin and his ability to rotae the strike well is an added bonus. He will look to make his confidence count once again on Wednesday.
Jason Roy (England): The opening batsman set the win for England upfront in a stupendous run-chase. Roy's attacking prowess and clear hitting gives England the opportunity to counter early on and have an attacking start. With Alex Hales supporting him, Roy has the license to thrill and go big at the powerplay overs. Afghan bowlers need to be wary of not allowing him to free his arms and go for the kill.
Mohammad Shahzad (Afghanistan):  He is certainly the most dangerous batsman in the Afghanistan team. Shahzad is capable of hitting boundaries at will at a brisk pacve. He has been in good nick and the pocket-sized dynamo showed against South Africa that why he needs to be feared. Afghanistan's batting depends a lot on Shahzad's performance and Wednesday is the bets time to do that well.
Mohammad Nabi (Afghanistan): He has been the most valuable all-rounder for Afghanistan of late. Nabi has contributed immensely and his off-spinners are handy for his side. He will have to contain the English batsmen and and also take responsibility with the bat.   source india.

Pakistan Not Good Enough to Enter World T20 Semis: Waqar Younis

Shahid Afridi 2203
Shahid Afridi scored only 19 against New Zealand in World T20.

P

Mohali: Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has hit out at his batsmen for failing to accelerate after a blistering start that cost them the crucial World T20 match against New Zealand.
Chasing 181, Ahmed Shehzad (30 off 32 balls) and Umar Akmal (24 off 26 balls) failed to capitalise on a good start provided by Sharjeel Khan (47 off 25 balls) to lose by 22 runs, which dampened Pakistan's prospects of securing a last-four berth in the mega-event.
"If you see, we didn't move at all from the eighth to the 15th over (run-rate slowed down). Two of our so-called youngsters, upcoming cricketers...they both batted for a good chunk of time in the middle, where we thought you would take the game away. We just hoped so, but couldn't finish," an upset Waqar said at the post match press conference. (Afridi Hints at Retirement)
He said Pakistan's performance was just not good enough.
"I think the platform we needed, we had got that. I think they bowled really well, one must admit that. In the middle, I think we couldn't find the boundaries, which were important.
And simply not good enough, I guess," said the coach.
'Not good enough'
Stating that it was "very painful" to see the batsmen repeating the same mistakes, Waqar said: "I think the Cricket Board and the selectors will have to take a call. Once again, I will say, not good enough."
On some batsmen complaining that they are not getting to bat at the desired positions, the former pacer said: "Twenty20 cricket is such a format where one should adjust and be able to adapt to the conditions. Those who are raising this issue that they are not getting to bat at desired position, there could not have been a better opportunity after Sharjeel created the platform.
"At one stage, we needed to score singles and doubles to win the match. But one must say, we are not good enough, I am simply saying that. No matter, how much we keep talking about we lack this and that, but people need to introspect, is this about number or is this about Pakistan," he slammed.
Having lost two out of three games, Pakistan are virtually out of the competition but Waqar said he would not like to lose hope.
"Look, we will keep hope. But the brand of cricket we are playing is unfortunate. It is not the question whether we should keep hope or not, after all life carries on hope.
However, the type of cricket and the kind of performance we are putting up, (we) don't deserve," he said.
